Description

PATools Data Encrypter is a very powerful tool for securing data within Microsoft Excel 97 onwards.

Unlike password protecting a file that can be forced open with other software, this software encrypts the data itself so as to appear meaningless to any reader. The encryption is based on a key you specify and the location of the data itself. Once encrypted it is impossible for anyone to understand the data, or even to tell whether it is text, a number or a formula, or even an empty cell! The only way to open the data is to decrypt it using the PATools Data Encrypter, for which you will need to know the encryption key originally used to encrypt the data.

The Encrypter uses complex formulae to rearrange the data based on non-linear replacement using multiple replacement strings computed from the key you choose, and then encrypts the data using a combination of the key and the location of the data. Since the key itself may contain almost any character from the Standard 101/102-Key Keyboard, and can vary in length from 5 to 75 characters, there are millions of possible keys. Thus even if somebody were to get hold of the encryption formula used by PATools, they would still find it almost impossible to decrypt data without knowing the key.

Trying different keys to open the data will not work either, because if data is decrypted with the wrong key then its integrity is permanently damaged. This improves the security, but at the cost of making it more dangerous to use! If you lose the key then not even PATools will be able to recover your data for you.
