Description

The quality of a network beside bandwidth and other static parameters depends on the number of dropped frames during a connection. Most protocols hide this fact by intelligent resent methods (TCP). Of course this resending of lost packets will slow down the speed and the connection is said to be poor. With NetQuality you can measure the number of dropped frames on the low network layer (ISO/OSI 1 - 2). While the test is running you can modify the packet size as well as the delay time between packets. Such tests for dropped packets are normally done via ICP / PING. Todays active components often handle ICMP packets with an extremely low priority or they aqre dropped totally. This is done because ICMP packets do not hold important user data and they are often used for DOS (denial of service) attacks. Therefore ICMP can not be seen as a good choice for network quality tests.

Because of this fact NetQuality can also do these tests without using ICMP (in local network only). This is realized by installing NetQuality on both stations to be tested. One acts as the sender the other as the receiver or echo. Therefore you can determine one way traffic as well. This is very important in full duplex environments.

The measured data can automatically be published on HTML pages.
